Green Party Candidates to Visit Swindon Ahead of EU Election

With the campaign for the European Elections in full swing, Molly Scott Cato and Carla Denyer (Green Party candidates for the South-West) will be visiting Swindon on Thursday 16th May.

They will be meeting Swindon voters in a variety of settings to get people’s views on a wide range of topics and let them know about what they have to offer for Swindon and the South West.

Molly is already well known for the hard work she’s already put in as one of the current MEPs for the region, from fighting for action against tax avoidance to stopping the use of bee-killing pesticides across Europe.

Carla is a Bristol councillor. She started the wave of Climate Emergency declarations that has swept across the country. Since she got the first one passed in Bristol dozens of councils have followed suit, until the London Assembly, and ultimately the UK Parliament followed her example.

Their visit will start in the Hreod Burna Urban Forest, where Steve Thompson, Green Party Parish Councillor for Central Swindon North, will be giving them a tour. Steve will be telling them about his plans to plant another 8,000 trees this year. As well as providing a fantastic environment for wildlife and people alike, it’s a step in the right direction in tackling the climate crisis, with millions more trees being a crucial element of reducing our carbon footprint.

The team will then be taking to the town centre for midday to engage with voters on the street and do some campaigning then in the afternoon there will be an informal drop-in at The Core in Old Town. These are ideal opportunities for people to meet Molly and Carla for a chat and to find out more about their policies for Europe, the climate emergency and any other issues that might come up. The Core event starts a 2pm, with free tickets available via the Swindon Area Green Party Facebook page.

Carla will be visiting the ‘We’re Open’ event organised by Swindon City of Sanctuary, to find out more about their work with refugees and asylum-seekers. The Green Party has consistently been a vocal supporter of refugees and asylum seekers, as well as being strongly pro-migration while other parties bought into Theresa May’s hostile environment.

The two candidates will arrive in Swindon in the week when the latest polls from YouGov are showing that the Green Party has overtaken the Conservatives in EU voting intentions, as both the Tory and Labour votes implode over their dithering on Europe. In contrast the Greens have had a consistent pro-Europe message since the Brexit referendum was first announced, and they feel they are being rewarded for sticking to their principles and continuing to fight for what they believe in.
