The Swindon Area Green Party have announced that Andy Bentley will again be standing in the North Swindon constituency, where he first competed in 2017.

This follows a good election year for the Greens locally, with their record performance in both the local council elections and for the EU parliament.

Announcing his candidacy on social media, Bentley said:

“I am very proud to announce that I will be again be standing for the Green Party in North Swindon in the upcoming General Election

Greens stand up for what they believe in. I am very proud to be representing the only Party that has consistently been pro-Europe, anti-austerity, and that has always recognised the climate emergency as the number one issue facing us today.

I will fight for strong public services, for good local schools and social housing. Without these things I would not be who I am today, and I will fight to give others the same opportunities in life that I have had.

Underpinning everything I do will be the passion for a fair and just society where every person is valued, cared for and listened to.”

According to Bentley a vote for the Green Party is one of the most powerful statements that you can make, since it will ensure that the issues they have been championing are kept high on the political agenda.

As part of his announcement, he has highlighted three areas of policy:

Vote Green to tackle the climate emergency

·         We are the only political party that is committed to tackling climate chaos as priority number one.

·         We will reduce carbon emissions from the UK to net zero by 2030.

·         We have a Green New Deal that changes the way our economy works, replacing fossil fuels with clean energy and creating hundreds of thousands of jobs. We know how we will implement and pay for this.

Vote Green to Remain in the EU and secure a People’s vote

·         We are a Remain party.

·         We need a People’s Vote to let voters have the final say on their future based on the facts as they are today.

·         Brexit would mean job losses, the end of freedom of movement and less protections for the environment. It would allow workers’ rights to be eroded and potentially threaten peace in Northern Ireland.

·         Inequality and lack of investment in communities are underlying reasons for people voting to leave the EU – we will tackle those things head on.

Vote Green to make our society work for everyone

·         We will prioritise quality of life and equality in our communities.

·         We will reinstate funding for local councils so that decisions on spending can be made locally.

·         We will invest in the NHS.

·         We will scrap tuition fees for further education.

·         We will scrap zero hours contracts.

·         We will build thousands of new energy efficient homes.
